From Hamamatsu to Okinawa - discover the remarkable diversity of Japanese military aviation.
Japan has long held a special appeal for aviation enthusiasts. Its unique blend of military aviation, aerospace technology and meticulous attention to detail has created one of the world's most fascinating destinations for photographers. From modern frontline fighter bases to outstanding aviation museums and spectacular air displays, few countries offer such a varied aviation experience.
Our Japan Super Mission has been carefully designed to showcase the very best of Japanese military aviation across three islands during an unforgettable two-week adventure. Travelling from the industrial heart of central Japan to the southern island of Kyushu before finishing in Okinawa, the tour combines museums, operational air bases and two major airshows with the opportunity to experience Japanese culture and hospitality along the way.
The journey begins in central Japan with visits to some of the country's most significant aviation locations. At Hamamatsu Air Park we'll explore one of Japan's finest aviation museums, home to an impressive collection of aircraft spanning the history of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. Interactive displays and beautifully presented exhibits make this an essential stop for anyone interested in Japanese aviation.
Nearby Gifu Air Base has played a vital role in the development and testing of many of Japan's military aircraft. As home to the Air Development and Test Wing, it has been involved in the evaluation of aircraft including the F-15J Eagle, F-2 fighter and Kawasaki C-2 transport. Combined with the adjacent aerospace museum, it provides a fascinating insight into Japan's aviation industry and defence capabilities.
We also visit Akeno, home of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Aviation School. Helicopter operations here offer a completely different perspective on Japanese military aviation, with aircraft supporting everything from troop transport and disaster relief to battlefield operations.
The tour then heads south to Kyushu, where attention turns to some of Japan's busiest operational fighter bases. Time around Nyutabaru Air Base allows us to experience one of the country's premier tactical fighter stations before attending the Nyutabaru Air Festival, one of Japan's most popular military aviation events. Combining impressive flying displays with extensive static aircraft, it offers excellent photographic opportunities throughout the day.
Continuing across Kyushu, we spend time around Tsuiki Air Base before visiting Kanoya, home to the outstanding Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Museum. Here the emphasis shifts to Japan's naval aviation history, with aircraft and exhibits illustrating the important role maritime aviation continues to play in protecting the nation's extensive coastline.
The final stage of our journey takes us to Okinawa. Located at the crossroads of the Pacific, Okinawa occupies a unique strategic position and is home to both Japanese and United States military aviation. During our stay we'll divide our time between Kadena Air Base, one of the busiest USAF installations in the world and nearby Naha Air Base, home of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force in Okinawa.
Our visit concludes with the Naha Air Festival, providing a fitting finale to the tour. Against the backdrop of Okinawa's subtropical coastline, visitors can expect a full programme of flying displays together with opportunities to photograph aircraft from across the Japanese Self-Defense Forces.
Throughout the tour we'll travel as a small group, allowing flexibility to adapt our plans where operational flying or weather presents unexpected opportunities. With all internal transport arranged, carefully selected accommodation and domestic flight schedules built into the packed itinerary, this is a straightforward way to experience a remarkable range of Japanese aviation that would be difficult to organise independently.

Day One – Depart the UK
Overnight flights to Japan.
Day Two – Arrival in Nagoya
Arrive in Japan and transfer to our hotel to prepare for the start of the tour.
Day Three – Hamamatsu
Visit the outstanding JASDF Air Park Museum together with opportunities to photograph activity around Hamamatsu Air Base.
Day Four – Gifu & Akeno
Explore the impressive aerospace museum and test flying at Gifu before continuing to Akeno, home of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Aviation School.
Day Five – Around Nagoya
Further opportunities to visit aviation locations in the Nagoya area before preparing for our journey south.
Day Six – Fly to Kyushu
Domestic flight to Miyazaki before transferring to our hotel close to Nyutabaru.
Day Seven – Nyutabaru Air Base
Spend the day around one of Japan's premier fighter bases, photographing operational activity where possible.
Day Eight – Nyutabaru Air Festival
Enjoy a full day at one of Japan's best military airshows with flying displays and static aircraft.
Day Nine – Tsuiki
Visit another important JASDF fighter base before continuing north through Kyushu.
Day Ten – Kanoya
Explore the excellent JMSDF Kanoya Air Base Museum before travelling onward.
Day Eleven – Okinawa
Domestic flight to Okinawa and transfer to our hotel.
Day Twelve – Kadena & Naha
Photographic opportunities around Kadena Air Base together with visits to locations around Naha.
Day Thirteen – Kadena
A further day exploring the outstanding photographic opportunities around Kadena.
Day Fourteen – Naha
Relaxed day exploring additional aviation locations around Okinawa.
Day Fifteen – Naha Air Festival
The tour concludes with a full day at the Naha Air Festival before our final evening together.
Day Sixteen – Return to the UK
Transfer to Naha Airport for flights home.
Photography
This tour is designed specifically for aviation photographers. A mixture of operational air bases, museums and airshows provides excellent opportunities for a wide variety of photography.
Recommended Lenses
A versatile telephoto such as a 100–500mm or 150–600mm will be ideal for flying displays and aircraft movements. A shorter zoom (24–105mm or similar) is recommended for museums, static aircraft and general travel photography.
Fitness
Overall fitness requirements are moderate. Most locations involve normal walking around museums and airshow sites with no strenuous hiking.
Weather
Early December is generally cool and comfortable across mainland Japan, becoming noticeably warmer in Okinawa. Layered clothing is recommended throughout the tour.
Accommodation
Hotels have been selected to minimise travel times and simplify the domestic flights between islands.
Transport
Travel will be by comfortable minibus together with scheduled domestic airline services between the Japanese islands.
Meals
Breakfast is included where provided by the hotels. Japan offers an excellent variety of restaurants to suit every taste and budget.
Money
Credit cards are widely accepted, although carrying a small amount of Japanese Yen remains advisable for smaller purchases and vending machines.
Photography Etiquette
Japan is renowned for its politeness and respect. We ask all participants to follow local guidance and respect any photography restrictions at military or museum locations.
Military Activity
Operational flying can never be guaranteed and remains subject to military requirements, weather and operational commitments. Our itinerary has been designed to maximise opportunities wherever possible.
